Hays County Community Microchip Scanning Stations
Hill Country Rescue & Recovery is proud to introduce community microchip scanning stations across Hays County—an initiative designed to reunite lost pets with their families faster, reduce shelter intake, and empower our community to take an active role in animal rescue.
🐾 What Are Microchip Scanning Stations?
Microchip scanning stations are accessible locations equipped with pet microchip scanners that anyone can use. These stations allow a found pet to be scanned on the spot, helping identify the owner quickly through a registered microchip.
You’ll begin seeing these stations placed in convenient, community-centered locations such as:
- Local fire departments
- Other community partners
🔍 How It Works
If you find a lost pet, the process is simple:
- Bring the pet to the nearest scanning station
- Use the scanner to check for a microchip
- Record the microchip number
- Look up the number in a pet registry database
- Contact the chip company, they will contact the owner and you reunite the pet!
In many cases, this can lead to same-day reunions—without the pet ever entering a shelter.
❤️ Why This Matters
Every year, countless lost pets are brought into shelters—not because they don’t have homes, but because there’s no easy way to identify their owners.
By placing scanning tools directly in the community, we can:
- Reunite pets with families faster
- Reduce overcrowding in local shelters
- Lower stress and risk for lost animals
- Empower residents to take immediate action
🌎 A Community-Driven Solution
Hays County is growing rapidly, and many areas are spread out or lack quick access to animal services. These stations help bridge that gap by making it possible for anyone to help a lost pet—no special training required.
This initiative turns neighbors into lifesavers.
⚠️ Important Reminder for Pet Owners
Microchips only work if they’re registered and up to date.
We encourage all pet owners to:
- Register their pet’s microchip
- Keep contact information current
- Check their registration annually
Hill Country Rescue & Recovery will also continue partnering with other local organizations to offer Free or low-cost microchipping and education events throughout the community.
